Grant H. Flint International Scholarship Awards Program

Completed applications must be received by respective chapters no later than May 1st of current calendar year.

SCHEDULE FOR SELECTION

  • May 1 – Deadline for submission of application materials to respective Chapter Scholarship Committee
  • June 1 – Deadline for submission of chapter candidates for review by International Scholarship Committee
  • June 1-15 – Announcements of Alaska Chapter Scholarships winners
  • July 15 – International Scholarship Committee meets to select winners
  • August 1-15  – Announcements of International Scholarships winners

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) has established the Grant H. Flint Scholarship Awards Program in an effort to promote education and professional development.  These annual scholarships were named for the individual in Southern California who was the driving force in the formation of SWANA.

AWARD CATEGORIES

Category I – Graduation high school seniors or graduate equivalent certified candidates who have been accepted for enrollment in a junior college, a four-year college, or a university (any program). To be eligible candidates must be sons, daughters, grandsons or granddaughters of a SWANA Member (sponsor) in good standing as of May 1st of the current calendar year.

Category II –Currently enrolled full-time college/university students who are entering their junior or senior undergraduate year in environmental science, engineering, or other suitable major related to the field of solid waste management. Eligible candidates must be sons, daughters, grandsons or granddaughters of a SWANA Member (sponsor) in good standing as of May 1st of the current calendar year or SWANA Student Member in good standing.

SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNT

The total amount given within Category I and Category II will be $20,000 to $25,000.  The amount for each individual award will be determined by the International Scholarship Committee

Robert P. Stearns/SCS Engineers Scholarship Award – Full-time students who are entering or are in graduate school pursuing a degree in environmental science, engineering or other suitable major related to the field of solid waste management.  Eligible candidates must be sons, daughters, grandsons or granddaughters of a SWANA Member (sponsor) in good standing as of May 1st of the current calendar year or SWANA Student Member in good standing.

SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNT

One award of $5,000

Harvey W. Gershman Award – This year, we are also fortunate to add a new $5,000 Harvey W. Gershman Scholarship for students attending Northeastern University in Boston, MA.  Applicants may contact Sara Bixby at s.bixby@swana.org for more information.

LOCAL ALASKA CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP

SWANA Alaska Chapter has established a local chapter scholarship program. To apply, please review the 2021 Category III Instructions and complete the Category III Application.  This application is separate from the international program and is only available on Alaska Chapter website.  Submittal of any of the above scholarships will automatically qualify for eligibility of the Alaska Chapter scholarships.

Category III Award – Currently enrolled in full-time college or university students who are entering their sophomore undergraduate year in a junior college or four-year college/university program in any field or students entering a trade, vocational or certification program.

SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNT

Three awards of $1,500
